The Major League Baseball regular season is right around the corner with first pitch set for later this month. Bettors at PA sportsbooks will need a lot of convincing before risking any money on the Pittsburgh Pirates.

What does recent history show us? Is there a time during the season when the Pirates are playing winning baseball? PennStakes.com – your source for PA casino bonuses – wondered just that.

Using Baseball-Reference.com, we pulled the Pirates’ records from the past three years to see in which month the team plays best. The start of a season is always important, especially for a young team. Here are where the Pirates stand each month:

Pittsburgh Pirates Best Month

Rank, Month Record Winning Pct.
1. April 40-34 .541
2. September 35-46 .432
3. June 30-50 .375
4. July 28-47 .373
5. August 31-54 .375
6. May 28-53 .346

Fast Starts in Pittsburgh

Based on the data, there is a clear winner. The Pirates have been solid right out of the gate. They have played their best baseball in April with a 40-34 record and .541 win-loss percentage.

It's all the other months that cause concern. Coming off a solid month should carry over into May, right? Nope. In fact, May is the Pirates’ worst month at 28-53 (.346).

June (30-50, .375) is third in the rankings, followed by July (28-47, .373) and August (31-54, .365).

September is the second-best month for Pittsburgh, but even that is below .500 at 35-46 (.432).

The Pirates start their 2024 campaign at the Miami Marlins on March 28. A trip to Washington follows (April 1-4), before coming home to face the Baltimore Orioles April 5.

What Do Oddsmakers Say About Pirates?

Here is a sample of how the Pirates are regarded at PA sports betting apps.

ESPN BET Pennsylvania has the Pirates at +15000 to win the World Series tied for last in the majors with the Nationals, Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals and Oakland Athletics.

The odds are the same at BetRivers PA, but the Pirates at +15000 at least are ahead of the Nationals and White Sox (both +20000) and the Rockies and A’s (both +50000).

If the months other than April don’t improve, the Pirates will be near the cellar again in the National League.
