August brought mixed results as official PA online casino and iGaming figures were released Tuesday by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB).

Total gaming revenue generated more than $457 million, down a mild 2.1% from July's $467 million, yet up a nice 7.5% from August 2022 ($425.39 million). Gamblers continued to head to retail locations across the state in August as retail table games gross revenue basically remained the same from July with more than $82.68 million posted, a 0.9% smidge down from July’s $83.42 million.

PA online slots enjoyed healthy increases with handle coming in over $2.772 billion, up 5.5% from July ($2.628 billion). Online slots gross revenue established a new record of more than $105.27 million, a significant 11% jump from July's $94.85 million. The August mark broke the old mark of more than $104.82 million set in March. iGaming tables also had nice jumps with handle coming in at $2.195 billion, up 5.0% from July ($2.091 billion) and tables gross revenue at over $37.26 million, up 5.4% from July ($35.36 million).

Retail slots were just the opposite, with handle posted at $2.63 billion, down 5.5% from July ($2.782 billion). Retail slots gross terminal revenue was over $203.19 million, down 5.3% from July’s $214.66 million. The number of slot machines in operation was 25,206 compared to 25,592 in August 2022.

Significant Jumps in Sports Betting Handle/Revenue

Total Pennsylvania sports betting handle posted at $393 million, up a huge $16.1 % from July's $338.45 million and up 8.3% from August 2022 ($363.05 million). Mobile sports betting handle for the month generated more than $367.17 million, up 16.2% from July ($316.09 million), and up 10.2% from August 2022 ($333.1 million). Mobile betting handle was 93.4% of the market.

However, gross sports betting revenue (taxable) for the month took a major hit coming in at more than $22 million, down a steep 31.4% from July ($32.09 million) and down 35.1% from August 2022 ($33.95 million). State tax revenue generated from sports wagering during August was over $7.48 million.
