How Do Eagles And Steelers Fare In December?
Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

Both of Pennsylvania’s NFL teams are in the playoff hunt, especially the Philadelphia Eagles, who are Super Bowl favorites or co-favorites depending on which Pennsylvania sports betting operator you consult. But with December looming, it’s worth wondering how that month has treated the Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers over the years.

With one of the most important months of the NFL season coming up, PennStakes used StatMuse.com to find the records of every NFL team in December since 2013. We then compiled those records to see how all 32 teams fared in December since 2013. All teams didn’t play the same number of games, so ranking is based on win percentage.

How Pittsburgh Steelers Do In December

As you can see from our research, both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles excel in December, at least in the past decade.

The black-and-gold gang representing the western half of Pennsylvania is No. 4 on our list. You can follow the Pittsburgh Steelers playoff chances all season at PennStakes.com.

Since the 2013 season, the Steelers are 29-15 in December games for a .659 winning percentage. Only the Green Bay Packers (32-9), Kansas City Chiefs (34-10) and Dallas Cowboys (28-14) have been better. Over what is now a 17-game regular season, that winning percentage translates to about an 11-6 record, pretty much always good enough to get to the playoffs. Since 2013, Pittsburgh has reached the playoffs six times and missed out four times.

Of particular note is the stretch that begins that 10-year span. From 2013 to 2017, coach Mike Tomlin’s team was 18-3 in December games; they made the playoffs four straight years from 2014-17.

BetMGM Pennsylvania Sportsbook has the Steelers at +8000 odds to win this year’s Super Bowl.

How Philadelphia Eagles Do In December

After the Steelers come the Baltimore Ravens at No. 5 (27-17 for a .614 winning percentage) and right on their heels are the Eagles (25-17, .595), who are in the sixth spot among the best December teams since 2013. Rounding out the top 10 are the Seattle Seahawks (26-18), New England Patriots (25-18), San Francisco 49ers (25-19) and New Orleans Saints (23-18).

After their comeback win over the Chiefs in Kansas City on Monday night, the Eagles are 9-1 and have +450 odds to claim the Vince Lombardi Trophy with several PA sportsbook apps operators. At DraftKings Sportsbook Pennsylvania, the Eagles are the lone Super Bowl favorites. With FanDuel Sportsbook Pennsylvania they’re co-favorites with the Chiefs. Both Caesars Sportsbook Pennsylvania and BetMGM have Philadelphia in a three-way tie at the top with the Chiefs and 49ers.

Three times in the past decade, the Eagles went 4-1 in December (2013, 2018 and 2019) and in 2021 the team was perfect, with three wins and a bye week. They were only 3-2 in December 2017, when Philly went on to win the Super Bowl. But one of those losses was 6-0 to Dallas on the season’s final day as the Eagles, who had already clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC, rested many starters.
