Every college football season, there always are a few programs that rise above preseason prognostications.

This year, PA betting sites could discover that one of those programs could be the University of Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh topped the list at +550 (15.4% chance) over Illinois (+650, 13.3%), but the favorite is Other. Other teams not on the list is at -150 (60%).

Although the Panthers did not make the initial top 25, they did receive 16 votes in the poll, behind Texas Tech, South Carolina, UCLA, UTSA, Arkansas and Boise State and ahead of Kentucky, Troy, Louisville, Auburn, Minnesota, Duke, Toledo, Mississippi State, Florida, Baylor, Illinois, Coastal Carolina, NC State, South Alabama, James Madison and Liberty.

In this year’s Atlantic Coast Conference preseason poll released on Aug. 1, Pitt finished in a tie for sixth with Duke, each garnering 1,511 points. Clemson, last year's ACC champion, topped the poll with 2,370 points with 103 first-place votes. Florida State finished second with 2,304 points and 67 first-place votes.

Pittsburgh (9-4, 5-3) finished second in the ACC Coastal Division last season, one game behind division winner North Carolina. The Panthers won a wild Sun Bowl, 37-35, over UCLA, to finish the season ranked at No. 22. It marked the first time since 1979-83 that Pitt earned Top 25 finishes in consecutive years, finishing No. 13 in 2021 after 11 wins and its first outright ACC title.

Pitt hosts Wofford in its season opener at Sept. 2 (ACC Network, 3:30 p.m.).
