Palmer Puts Penn State in Top 5
The Keystone State ranks inside the top five at No. 4 with a total of five winners (four to one player) and an average to par score of -6.8. Missouri tied Pennsylvania with five winners, but their average to par score was -3 overall.
Latrobe native Arnold Palmer, arguably golf's most revered ambassador and champion, won The Masters four times (1958, 1960, 1962, 1964).
Honesdale native Art Wall, Jr. won 14 times on the PGA Tour, including the 1959 Masters, in which he fired a 4-under par 284 to defeat Cary Middlecoff (-3, 285) by one stroke and Palmer (-2, 286) by two strokes. Wall’s first-place winnings that year: $15,000.
Texas topped the list with 14 winners and a solid -9.6 average to par overall score. California came in second with 11 winners (-11 overall score), Ohio finished third with seven winners, with the majority (6) by the great Jack Nicklaus.
