Commercial and Retail Casinos in PA
The first land-based casino to open in Pennsylvania was the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, which greeted its first customers in November 2006. There are now more than a dozen retail casinos in various locations across the Keystone State. Some are racinos, and many have a partnership with a partner that operates an online casino.
Mini-Casinos in Pennsylvania
Mini Casinos, known as category 4 casinos, can have 300-750 slot machines. By paying an extra $2.5 million for a license, these satellite casinos can also have up to 30 table games.
The mini-casino licenses were given out through auctions.
The first auctions started in January 2018 and were only for already licensed casinos. Penn National won the first license by paying $50.1 million, allowing them to open a new location 50 miles from their Hollywood Casino. These auctions raised $124 million, and five mini-casinos were approved.
